How to Know When It's Time to Move

Most seniors don’t wake up one morning and say, “Today’s the day!"

It's a quietly building decision.

It shows up in small signs:
  • The laundry stays undone longer.
  • Stairs feel steeper.
  • Appointments are missed.
  • The house feels heavier to manage.
  • A fall happens, or almost happens.
But the real question isn’t: “Can I still live here?”The better question is: “Is this sustainable for the next 2–3 years?”
Three Signs It May Be Time
  • Safety is becoming unpredictable. One fall can change everything. If you’re rearranging life to reduce risk, the risk is already real.
  • Support is being stretched thin. If your adult children are quietly absorbing more and more responsibility, that’s not aging in place — that’s aging in dependence.
  • Decisions are being postponed out of fear. Waiting feels easier. But waiting often removes options.
The Hard Truth
The best time to move is rarely when things are “bad.”It’s when there’s still enough strength, energy, and clarity to choose well.
The goal isn’t to move early. The goal is to avoid moving in crisis.
If you’re wondering whether it’s time, that question deserves a calm, honest conversation. It doesn't mean you need to move today. It does mean you need to plan.
